Dispensary Etiquette: 12 Unwritten Rules Everyone Should Know

From tipping your budtender to not hogging the display case, here are the unwritten rules of dispensary etiquette that will make your visit smoother.

The Unwritten Rules

  1. Have your ID ready. Don't make the security guard or receptionist wait while you dig through your wallet. Have it out and ready before you get to the counter.
  2. Know what you want (roughly). You don't need to know exact products, but having a general idea ("I want something for sleep" or "I want a mid-range vape") saves time.
  3. Don't be on your phone during the consultation. Your budtender is trying to help you — give them your attention.
  4. Ask questions! No question is too basic. Budtenders love helping people learn.
  5. Don't touch products unless invited. Most dispensaries keep products behind glass. Ask before handling.
  6. Be patient during busy times. Weekends and after work hours are peak. Plan accordingly or visit during off-peak times.
  7. Tip your budtender. Not all dispensaries have tip jars, but where they do, $2-5 on a standard purchase is appreciated. Budtenders are often paid modestly and tips make a difference. See the full tipping guide.
  8. Don't haggle on price. Dispensary prices are set and typically non-negotiable. Ask about deals and discounts instead.
  9. Don't open products in the store or parking lot. Wait until you're in a legal, private setting and review driving rules.
  10. Be respectful of other customers' privacy. Don't stare at what others are buying or comment on their purchases.
  11. Don't come in visibly impaired. Dispensaries can refuse service to anyone who appears intoxicated.
  12. Leave a review if you had a good experience. Positive reviews help dispensaries and guide other customers.

Tipping at Dispensaries

Tipping at dispensaries has become increasingly common. Here's a guide, plus broader dispensary etiquette guidance:

  • $2-3: Standard purchase, quick interaction
  • $5+: Extended consultation, complex order, great service
  • 10-15% of purchase: For exceptional service or large orders
  • No tip required: If the dispensary doesn't have a tip mechanism, don't worry about it

Note that not all dispensaries allow tipping due to compliance regulations. If there's no tip jar or option on the payment terminal, tipping isn't expected.

When to Visit

For the best experience:

  • Weekday mornings: Typically the quietest time. Best for first-timers who want unhurried attention during a first visit.
  • Avoid 4:20 PM on Fridays: This is often the busiest time of the week.
  • Avoid holidays: 4/20 (April 20), Green Wednesday (day before Thanksgiving), and 7/10 (dab day) are extremely busy.
  • Check for happy hours: Some dispensaries have specific hours with deals — you get savings and a potentially quieter shop.
