How to Pay at a Dispensary: Cash, Debit & Other Options

Most dispensaries are cash-heavy due to federal banking restrictions. Learn about all the payment options, why credit cards don't work, and how to prepare.

Why Most Dispensaries Are Cash-Only (or Cash-Preferred)

Here's the fundamental problem: cannabis is still illegal at the federal level. Because of this, most banks and credit card companies (which operate under federal regulations) won't process transactions for cannabis businesses. This means most dispensaries can't accept traditional credit card payments.

The situation has been slowly improving, with more banking options becoming available, but cash remains the dominant payment method at dispensaries across the country. If you are new, pair this with the first-visit checklist.

Payment Methods at Dispensaries

  • Cash: Accepted everywhere. The most common and reliable payment method, especially for first-time shoppers.
  • Debit cards (PIN-based): Many dispensaries accept PIN-based debit transactions. This routes through a different network than credit cards and is available at many shops.
  • CanPay: A cannabis-specific payment app that links to your bank account. Used by many dispensaries.
  • Dutchie Pay: Available at dispensaries that use the Dutchie platform for online ordering.
  • Aeropay: Another cannabis payment app that connects to your bank.
  • ATM on-site: Most dispensaries have an ATM available. Expect $2.50-$5.00 fees. Plan ahead with this dispensary checklist.

Tips for Paying at a Dispensary

  • Bring enough cash. Check prices and tax rates online before you go so you know how much to bring.
  • Remember the tax. Cannabis taxes can be 15-35%+ depending on the state. Budget accordingly and review state law examples like California.
  • Bring small bills. Dispensaries can make change, but having bills close to your expected total is convenient.
  • Check if your debit card works. Not all banks allow cannabis transactions even via debit. Test at the ATM first if unsure.
  • Download payment apps in advance. If the dispensary uses CanPay or similar, set up your account before visiting. You can also review common dispensary FAQs.
