Cannabis in Arizona: Overview
Arizona has one of the more robust cannabis markets in the country, with both recreational and medical programs running simultaneously. Proposition 207 passed in November 2020 with about 60% of the vote, and recreational sales began in January 2021 — one of the fastest rollouts in the nation.
The Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) regulates both programs. Many existing medical dispensaries added recreational sales, creating a large network of dual-license retailers across the state.
Recreational vs. Medical
While anyone 21+ can purchase recreationally, there are advantages to having a medical card in Arizona. Medical patients have higher purchase limits (2.5 oz vs 1 oz), pay lower taxes (no 16% excise tax), and may access products with higher potency in some cases.
Medical patients must be 18+ (or have a caregiver) and have a qualifying condition certified by a physician.
Where to Buy
Licensed dispensaries are located throughout Arizona, with major concentrations in Phoenix, Tucson, Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa, and Flagstaff. Many dispensaries offer both recreational and medical sales. Online ordering and delivery are available from many locations.
