Cancer, epilepsy, glaucoma, HIV/AIDS, Crohn's, Parkinson's, MS, PTSD, ALS, chronic nonmalignant pain, and other conditions of the same kind or class, or any terminal condition.
How to Get a Card
Patients must be examined by a qualified physician who is registered with the Florida Department of Health's Office of Medical Marijuana Use. The physician enters the patient into the Medical Marijuana Use Registry, and the patient then applies for a card ($75 fee).
Medical Marijuana in Florida
Florida has one of the largest medical marijuana programs in the United States, with over 800,000 active cardholders as of 2025. The program was established through Amendment 2 in 2016, which passed with a commanding 71% of the vote.
The state uses a vertically integrated model, where licensed Medical Marijuana Treatment Centers (MMTCs) handle cultivation, processing, and retail. Major operators include Trulieve, Curaleaf, Surterra, MÜV, and Liberty Health Sciences, with dispensary locations across the state.
Getting a Florida Medical Card
Florida has a relatively straightforward process for getting a medical card. Patients must first see a qualified, registered physician for an in-person examination. If the physician determines that the patient has a qualifying condition, they enter the patient into the state's Medical Marijuana Use Registry.
After the physician submits the order, patients can apply for their medical card through the state registry. The card costs $75 and is valid for 1 year. Many physician offices now offer both in-person and telemedicine evaluations.
The 2024 Recreational Vote
Amendment 3 appeared on Florida's November 2024 ballot, which would have legalized recreational cannabis for adults 21+. While it received approximately 57% of the vote, it failed to reach the 60% supermajority required to amend Florida's constitution. For now, recreational cannabis remains illegal in Florida.
