Cannabis in Virginia
Virginia made history in 2021 as the first state in the South to legalize recreational cannabis possession. However, similar to Delaware, the retail framework has been delayed by political disagreements. Adults can legally possess up to 1 ounce and grow up to 4 plants at home, but there are no recreational dispensaries.
Virginia's medical program is operational, with pharmaceutical processors (the state's term for dispensaries) operating across the state. The Virginia Cannabis Control Authority was established to eventually oversee the recreational market.
