Cannabis-Friendly Hotels & Accommodations Guide
Most hotels prohibit cannabis use, but options are growing. Here's how to find cannabis-friendly accommodations and what to know about consumption policies.
The Hotel Problem
Here's a common frustration for cannabis travelers: you can legally buy cannabis in a state like Colorado or California, but you can't consume it in most places you'd stay. The vast majority of hotels, motels, and even many vacation rentals prohibit cannabis use on their property.
Major hotel chains (Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt, etc.) have blanket no-cannabis policies at all properties, even in legal states. This is partly due to federal law, partly smoking policies, and partly to avoid disturbing other guests.
How to Find Cannabis-Friendly Accommodations
- Cannabis-specific booking platforms: Sites like Bud and Breakfast (budandbreakfast.com) specialize in cannabis-friendly accommodations — like Airbnb specifically for cannabis travelers.
- Vacation rentals with lenient policies: Some Airbnb and VRBO hosts in legal states allow cannabis consumption (usually outdoors). Always check the listing rules and message the host to confirm.
- 420-friendly hotels: A growing number of independent hotels and boutique properties in places like Denver, Portland, Las Vegas, and Palm Springs market themselves as cannabis-friendly.
- Campgrounds: Private campgrounds in legal states sometimes allow cannabis use. Always check with the campground first. Cannabis is prohibited on all federal land (national parks, national forests).
Consumption Lounges
A newer option in some states: licensed cannabis consumption lounges. These are venues where you can legally consume cannabis on-site, similar to a bar for alcohol. As of 2026, consumption lounges are available in:
- Las Vegas, Nevada: The first and largest market for consumption lounges
- West Hollywood, California: Several licensed lounges
- Denver, Colorado: Licensed social consumption establishments
- Some locations in Illinois, Michigan, and New Jersey
Consumption lounges solve the "where do I use it" problem for travelers and are likely to expand to more markets.
Rules and Etiquette
- Never smoke in a non-smoking hotel room. Even in a legal state, smoking in a non-smoking room will result in a cleaning fee ($250-$500+).
- Edibles are the most hotel-friendly option. No smoke, no smell, no detection.
- Vape pens are more discreet than flower. Less odor, but still may violate hotel policies.
- Balconies and outdoor areas: Some hotels may tolerate outdoor consumption but most still prohibit it. Always ask first.
- Respect other guests. Even in cannabis-friendly accommodations, be mindful of shared spaces.
