Cannabis in Washington State
Washington was a cannabis pioneer, with Initiative 502 passing in November 2012 alongside Colorado's Amendment 64. Retail sales began July 8, 2014. The Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board (LCB) regulates the industry.
Washington's market is one of the most established in the country, with licensed retailers throughout the state. Seattle, Tacoma, Spokane, and Bellingham are major cannabis markets. The state has seen over $1 billion in annual cannabis sales in recent years.
The 37% Tax
Washington has one of the highest cannabis tax rates in the country at 37% excise tax. This is a significant factor in pricing. Medical patients who register in the state's medical marijuana authorization database are exempt from this excise tax and the state sales tax, providing substantial savings.
