Illinois legalized recreational cannabis in 2019 through the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act, becoming the first state to do so through the legislature (rather than ballot measure). Recreational sales began January 1, 2020. Illinois also has a medical program dating back to 2013.

Recreational: 21+
Medical: 18+
Purchase Limits
Rec: Residents: 30g flower, 5g concentrate, 500mg THC in edibles. Non-residents: half those amounts (15g, 2.5g, 250mg).
Med: 2.5 oz of flower per 14-day period
Public Consumption
Prohibited in most public places. Cannot consume in vehicles, on school grounds, near anyone under 21, or where smoking is banned. Some municipalities may allow consumption lounges.
Home Growing
Medical patients only — up to 5 plants per household in a locked, enclosed space. Recreational users may not grow at home.
